A live Christmas tree brings unmatched beauty, fragrance, and tradition to your home during the holiday season. But keeping your tree looking lush and vibrant requires a little extra care. Follow these tips to ensure your tree stays fresh and festive all season long.
Choosing the Perfect Tree
Before bringing a tree home, inspect it carefully. Look for vibrant green needles that are flexible and don’t fall off easily when touched. At Fossil Creek Nursery, pre-treat all of our farm fresh trees with anti-wilt spray to ensure they stay healthy and last longer in your home.
Prep Before Bringing Your Tree Inside
Once you’ve selected your tree:
- Make a Fresh Cut: When you get home, trim 1–2 inches off the base of the trunk. This removes any resin buildup and allows the tree to absorb water more effectively.
- Keep It Cool: If you’re not setting up your tree immediately, store it in a cool, shaded place with the trunk in water.
Choose the Right Stand
Use a sturdy stand that holds at least one gallon of water. Avoid carving down the trunk to fit the stand—it compromises the tree’s ability to absorb water.
Hydration is Key
A live tree can drink up to a gallon of water per day, especially in the first week.
- Check the water level daily and refill as needed.
- Never let the water level drop below the base of the trunk—once the cut end seals with sap, the tree will struggle to take up water.
- Avoid additives like sugar or aspirin; plain tap water is all your tree needs.
Placement Matters
Where you place your tree can impact its freshness:
- Avoid Heat Sources: Keep your tree away from fireplaces, radiators, and direct sunlight, as these can dry it out quickly.
- Choose a Cool Spot: A room-temperature area with good airflow is ideal.
Decorate Mindfully
- When you first bring your tree home, give it some time to take in some water and for the branches to drop before you decorate.
- Avoid heavy ornaments that could damage fragile branches.
- Christmas trees can easily catch on fire. Remember to turn off Christmas tree lights if you plan on being away from home for a long period of time.
Monitor and Adjust
Keep an eye on your tree throughout the season:
- If needles start to fall excessively or the branches droop, the tree may not be getting enough water.
- Clean up fallen needles regularly to reduce fire hazards.
What to Do After the Holidays
When the season ends, don’t just toss your tree—consider these options:
- Recycling Programs: Many communities offer Christmas tree recycling, turning them into mulch or compost.
- Wildlife Habitat: In some areas, trees can be repurposed as shelters for wildlife.
- Garden Mulch: If you have a chipper, you can create your own mulch from the tree.
